Making CBD oil from trims

Nowadays, cannabidiol turns out to be the dominant therapy in many dispensaries across the globe. Although the recent surge in international media coverage might suggest otherwise, CBD has been around for just as long as THC. And it’s here to stay.

In reality, the primogenitor marijuana plants, that initially originated in Asia, were indica-dominant strains. The CBD in indica-dominant plants gives its users a relaxed, calm feeling which is medically important for myriad ailments. The public interest in CBD oil has therefore increased significantly, also focussing on topics such as making CBD oil from trims.

Extracting CBD

Extracting CBD using high-proof food-safe alcohol is safe and not too difficult to perform. By following this method, you should be able to make potent medical CBD oil with no need to have sophisticated equipment or special skills. Moreover, grain alcohol leaves no harmful residue in the extraction. At the same time it is considered the ideal solvent for the production of small batches of high quality cannabis oil.

What do you need?

  • Three ounces of ground, dried trim.
  • One gallon of solvent (preferably grain alcohol or other high-proof alcohol; always avoid rubbing alcohol).
  • Kitchen tools (think of a large wooden spoon, plastic syringe for dosage and dispensing of oil, funnel and a silicone spatula).
  • Catchment container.
  • Medium-sized mixing bowl (glass would be the best option, otherwise ceramic).
  • Strainer (a cheesecloth/stainless steel kitchen sieve combo, or cotton muslin bags would do the trick).
  • Double boiler (au-bain marie).

Let’s start cooking

Before making CBD oil from trims, it is important to arrange the equipment. Don’t do this in a hurry and organise before getting started. Ensure that everything is clean and carefully set up. Once you’re ready, first fully cover the plant material in the mixing bowl with alcohol and stir for three to five minutes. Use the wooden spoon to do so. You will then need to do this to get rid of the resin. Make sure the bowl can contain both the raw material and the solvent.

Filter the liquids

Next, filter all the liquids. Use the sieve while collecting the first raw extraction into the catchment container. When doing this, make sure you squeeze out as much liquid as possible. This process can eventually be repeated with a new batch of solvent. The idea is to extract as much compounds as possible from the plant.

Let it bubble

Drain the strained liquid au bain-marie and heat it until it starts to boil. Let the alcoholic substance evaporate without changing the temperature. Make sure to keep the heat at minimum or turn it on and off accordingly. The mixture has to keep mildly bubbling for about 15 to 30 minutes. Don’t forget the stirring and don’t let the liquid get too hot. When the alcohol starts to evaporate, mix the solution and then scrape the bowl. Do this with the silicone spatula.

Finish the process

It’s time to carefully remove the oil into a storage bottle before it gets too thick. Make sure it’s still hot. You could also draw the CBD oil into plastic syringes or store it into a small container. In that case you would need a dark and airtight container. Dosages can be portioned off by using toothpicks and small spoons. You will need to squeeze small amounts of oil out from the syringe. The CBD oil extraction with the grain alcohol method is safe, and its outcome is suitable for ingestion. Alternatively the CBD can be reduced with coconut oil or other vegetable oils, making it suitable for local skin applications.
